Cancer Ingress 2018

As the Aries Ingress for the year for the USA had a movable sign rising, we consider the Cancer Ingress to describe the influences and events in the next quarter. As before, we will examine the Ingress through the William Ramesey’s rules as described in his book Astrologia Munda published in 1653. In addition, we will consider the influences of the outer planets if they form tight and significant aspects with the other planets.

Bonatti’s electional astrology for war and conquering enemies

In honour of Mars’ ingress into Scorpio, here is an election from Guido Bonatti’s Liber Astronomiae, Treatise 7 on Elections for going to war and for conquering enemies.

Given the serious nature of the subject (and the fact that the astrologer might get beheaded by either side if he gets this wrong), war elections can be incredibly involved and intricate. We require the following conditions:

An election from al-Rijal to apply for a loan

This is a house based election for applying for a loan that is originally from al-Rijal but a version of which is also detailed in Bonatti’s Liber Astronomiae and adapted for our use.

The electional conditions are as follows:

1.  Ascendant in Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Aquarius
2.  Moon also in one of the above signs, of little light, and aspecting one of the benefics or Mercury
3. The Lord of the First and the Lord of the Seventh be unafflicted and, if possible, in harmony with each other, and, if possible, receiving each other
4.  It should not be the hour of the malefics or of the Sun

Money Stay With Me: An election for maintaining wealth

If indeed the intention of him for whom you elect were to make money, so that it would always remain in his possession, indeed so that it is not given over in the end to someone else, let the Ascendant at the hour of the election be a fixed sign; and let the Lord of the Ascendant and the Moon and the Lord of the Second be in fixed signs, free from impediments, and do not let them be removed from the angles.” – Guido Bonatti, Liber Astronomiae, Treatise 7, p707 (Benjamins Dykes translation)

An election from Bonatti for gambling

Bonatti gives us an election for dice games, but which can be extended to other games of chance. We want the following conditions:

Electional conditions

1. The ascendant in movable sign
2. Lord 1 in good condition and well disposed
3. Lord 7 weak and impedited
4. If possible, let Lord 8 in House 2 or House 1, received by Lord 2 or Lord 1 (but do not let Lord 8 receive Lord 2)
5. Preferably we want the Moon separating from a free benefic and applying to another benefic, and the moon should be above earth, and we should be facing in the direction of wherever the moon happens to be at the time

Simple elections for buying and selling

Naturally, if you are trading on a somewhat regular basis, you may not have the good fortune to be able to wait a prolonged period of time for the perfect election to come along to buy or sell your wares. Perhaps you only have a brief window to negotiate a price for the local Afghan warlord’s opium crop before exfil. For just such instances, Ramesey provides some more basic electional rules for trade (some are designed to benefit the buyer and others the seller, so bear this in mind).

An election for exorcism and house cleansing from Bonatti

And if someone wished to eject or expel phantasms or some harmful spirit (which is called the Devil by certain people) from some place or home, or some harmful thing either terrible or infesting the inhabitants of that place, or [if] in some person there were some violent motions (which is called demonic), and you wished to administer some medicine or perform some exorcism or the like, and you wanted to elect for him the hour fit for it, adapt the Ascendant and its Lord, and beware lest the Ascendant be Cancer or Leo or Scorpio or Aquarius; not let the Moon be in one of those signs; let the Ascendant be whatever [other] one you wanted, and its Lord free, and let [not] the Moon be in any one of them, joined to some benefic, nor let her be impeded.

Guido Bonatti, Book of Astronomy p.769 (translated by Benjamin Dykes)
