An election to chase a man away from his place

Make an image with a tortuous sign ascending, and with the lord of the ascendant cadent from the ascendant, fourth, seventh or tenth house, and the Moon similarly cadent. Bury the image at a crossroad under the Via Combusta, and make the face of the image look away from his place, and you will see miracles. – Picatrix, transl. John Michael Greer & Christopher Warnock

This is a nice example of a fairly simple multi-part election from the Picatrix. It is malefic in nature as, in its basic form, it is designed to “chase a man from his place”, and we make it more malefic still by afflicting the ascendant.

A Picatrix enemy destruction election (in 3 parts)

Make two images, the first in the hour of the Sun, with Leo rising and the Moon cadent from the ascendant, and the other make in the hour of the Mars with Cancer rising and Mars cadent from the Moon, and make them in the form of one striking another, Bury them in the hour of Mars with the first face of Aries rising. When you have done this, you will be able to act against your enemy as you wish. – The Picatrix, tranl. John Michael Greer & Christopher Warnock

To continue with our examination, during the season of the malefics, of some of the more malicious uses for electional astrology in the Picatrix, today we’ll look at another one of the enemy destruction elections from Book 1, Chapter 5.

A Picatrix election for the destruction of enemies

“Make an image in the form and likeness of the one to whom you wish evil, in the hour of Mars, with the Moon in Scorpio; and if you are able, make the ascendant unfortunate, putting an infortune in the ascendant or forming a bad aspect to the ascendant, and put the infortune in aspect with the lord of the ascendant; and make unfortunate the lord of the ascendant and the lord of the fourth house, and make them aspect each other, or make unfortunate the lord of the ascendant in the fourth house, or have it received by a malefic in fourth house or ascendant.” The Picatrix, Book I, Chapter 5 transl. John Michael Greer & Christopher Warnock

Since we seems to be approaching the season of the malefics, let’s take a look at one of the more malicious uses for the electional astrology of the Picatrix.

The Picatrix and the Invocation of Perfect Nature

Certain people inquired of Hermes the sage, asking: “With what are science and philsophy joined?”  He answered, “With Perfect Nature.”  They asked again, saying, “What is the root of science and philosophy?”  He said, “Perfect Nature.”  Then they questioned him more closely: “What is key by which science and philosophy are opened?”  He answered, “Perfect Nature.”  They then asked of him, “What is Perfect Nature?”  He answered, “Perfect Nature is the spirit of the philosopher or sage linked to the planet that governs him.  This is that which opens the closed places of knowledge and by which is understood that which cannot otherwise be understood at all, and from which workings proceed naturally both in sleep and waking.” Book III Chapter 6, The Picatrix transl. John Michael Greer & Christopher Warnock

Mars in Scorpio elections

Mars is dignified by domicile in Scorpio this month from 9 December and will remain in that sign until the 19th of January next year.  It is a good time to do all those martial things you’ve been putting off like crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you and hearing the lamentation of their women.

Of course, if you are not a Cimmerian barbarian, or you are simply short of worthy enemies to vanquish, you may want to use the time to create a Mars talisman for strength, courage, protection and general Martian goodness.

A Lunar Mansion election for Love

I have had a few queries from people who were concerned about creating Venus talismans because of an afflicted Venus in their nativities. I understand the concerns but, in practice, I have only seen beneficial effects from talismans of the benefics – and this is coming from someone who has an afflicted Venus and Jupiter.

For those who, for whatever reason, would prefer not to create a Venus talisman, here is an election for the 26th Lunar Mansion, Al Fargh al-Awal.

Three Venus in Libra Elections

It’s going to be a busy time for any astrological magician from October towards the end of the year with Venus, Mars and Saturn all entering signs of their dignity at various points during it.  These three elections are for when Venus is dignified by domicile in LIbra between 14 October and 7 November.  It’s a good time to create talismans and images for love, friendship, popularity, good relations, to alleviate melancholy moods, and for wealth.

Creating and reconciling relationships – two-fold images of the Picatrix

“If you do this for two friends, make the 11th house of the first image the ascendant of the second image; and if you wish to generate friendship between man and wife, make the ascendant of the second image the seventh house of the first image.  And make it so the lord of the ascendant of the one who will return the friendship [i.e., the friend or wife] makes as good aspect with reception to the lord of the ascendant of the other image.  Then join the images and bury them in the place of the one who is to have friendship [i.e., you] and they will be friends as before.” – Book 1, Chapter 3, Greer and Warnock translation

As an example, let us assume that you want to create friendship between two people (reconcile two friends), you would do the following:
